Eat My Review: Host Gator Sucks

Heard they giving problems? Some say Hostgator scams? Can these negative reviews be trusted? Looking for Hostgator issues? Heard some stories about their limitations? READ THIS FIRST!
If you are considering to get a hosting account from Hostgator, you may want to (or probably have tried) searching for the keywords “Hostgator Sucks” on Google. However, the result may confuse you. Perhaps you have read tons of good stuff and rave reviews about Hostgator thus far.
Hostgator experiences and stories like below may make you think twice to signup with Hostgator:

“My saga with them began when they took down one of my websites I had hosted with them back in November 2006 without notice because they claimed my site used 11% of the CPU. ”

If you go through each of Googles result pages, it seems there are thousands of unsatisfied customers who have been through some sticky situation with Hostgator. If you search for the keywords “Hostgator sucks”, you see that there are more than 28,000 results by Google. That is a lot of bad things said about one hosting (assuming all those result pages talks about why this hosting provider really sucked). There may be more result pages (more than 50,000) when you search for “Hostgator scam”. Should these hate or complaint sites worry you after you have read so many positive reviews? Should hate sites like hostgator-sucks.com and hostgator-scam.com (these sites may have been taken down due to some legal actions) make you change your mind?
Think again. Do not dismiss the fact that Hostgator is one of the better known web hosts in the industry. You have read the reviews. Though nothing they do is completely spectacular or unbelievable, they do what a hosting company should do. That is, HostGator actually answers their phones, replies to their emails, responds to live chat requests, doesn’t rip you off, and provides quality hosting. So among the millions of satisfied clients, surely they will be some who disagree. Let us look at the numbers:

From the above number, only 1 out 100 pages about Hostgator hates the hosting. This is not so bad considering other hostings also have similar or worst ratio. The hate pages is negligible if we look at the numbers above.

Right on man, I really appreciate your reviews. I’m going through hell right now trying to find the right host who doesn’t oversell. I was with HostVector for 6 years but 2 month ago they got bought out by Millenium Data and its been nothing but hell since. The old host was amazing, these new guys who bought them out have no clue what they’re doing. They don’t even answer the support tickets which is something the old owners did flawlessly!
Anyway, keep it up. You definitely earned a bookmark.
Good to hear this review helps. I try not to review from the traditional point of view. Instead of doing the “best web hosting” review, I try to look at the bad angle first and see which hosting company “suck the least” or has the least problems or complaints. Hostgator seems one of the best from this perspective.
I have started another website http://www.hostingsthatsuck.com to review web hostings that “suck”.
I have not had experience with Host Gator’s hosting. From what I can tell on Host Jury, they appear to be a decently solid hosting company.
What I have had experience with however, is their affiliate program. We sent several of our clients via our affiliate link, and were not credited with any sales. When I contacted support, my response was very fast and polite. I was told however that all our referrals were sent via different affiliate links, and was notified of their ‘last cookie’ policy.
While I don’t doubt that clients could have visited HG through our link, and then visited HG again through another affiliate link, it’s puzzling to me that it happened with several different accounts.
Based on this, we’ve decided that we’ll no longer recommend HG to anyone, and would strongly advise website owners not to use their affiliate program at all. We’ll absolutely be sending the rest of our clients some place else.
Hi Jim, sorry to hear your experience with their affiliate program. If I were you and have web hosting clients to refer to, what I would do is get the reseller hosting.
It cost you a little bit more for a reseller account but you get to keep the clients paying YOU, year after year. Two to three clients on the reseller hosting is enough to cover your cost. The rest is profit.
