Hi Jim, sorry to hear your experience with their affiliate program. If I were you and have web hosting clients to refer to, what I would do is get the reseller hosting. It cost you a little bit more for a reseller account but you get to keep the clients paying YOU, year after year. Two to three clients on the reseller hosting is enough to cover your cost. The rest is profit.

I have not had experience with Host Gator’s hosting. From what I can tell on Host Jury, they appear to be a decently solid hosting company.

What I have had experience with however, is their affiliate program. We sent several of our clients via our affiliate link, and were not credited with any sales. When I contacted support, my response was very fast and polite. I was told however that all our referrals were sent via different affiliate links, and was notified of their ‘last cookie’ policy.

While I don’t doubt that clients could have visited HG through our link, and then visited HG again through another affiliate link, it’s puzzling to me that it happened with several different accounts.

Based on this, we’ve decided that we’ll no longer recommend HG to anyone, and would strongly advise website owners not to use their affiliate program at all. We’ll absolutely be sending the rest of our clients some place else.

Good to hear this review helps. I try not to review from the traditional point of view. Instead of doing the “best web hosting” review, I try to look at the bad angle first and see which hosting company “suck the least” or has the least problems or complaints. Hostgator seems one of the best from this perspective.

I have started another website http://www.hostingsthatsuck.com to review web hostings that “suck”.

Right on man, I really appreciate your reviews. I’m going through hell right now trying to find the right host who doesn’t oversell. I was with HostVector for 6 years but 2 month ago they got bought out by Millenium Data and its been nothing but hell since. The old host was amazing, these new guys who bought them out have no clue what they’re doing. They don’t even answer the support tickets which is something the old owners did flawlessly!

Anyway, keep it up. You definitely earned a bookmark.
